Chapter 2
Back from the Dead?
Immediately following the press conference, the mayor went to his office and gathered his staff for an emergency meeting. With his campaign for state senator in danger of spiraling out of control, and his struggle to keep order in the city, the mayor was in desperate need of some good news. He was hoping that one of his staff members would deliver it.
The mayor sat behind his large oak desk and watched as the members of his staff entered the spacious office. Everyone took their respective places, and the mayor leaned back in his leather chair and surveyed the room. They just sat there staring at the mayor, waiting for him to say something. The longer no one said anything, the more nervous the staff started to become. With the tension and confusion mounting, Dexter Coram finally broke the ice.
âWell, I think that went well,â the ever positive chief of staff began.
Everyone in the room could feel the collective sigh of relief as the tension was finally released. Following Dexterâs lead, the whole staff nodded their heads in agreement. They all wanted to stay positive and encourage the mayor. To put it plain and simple, their futures depended on the mayorâs future. If the mayor lost his job, they would also be losing their jobs.
Truthfully, they knew that before the mayor would allow himself to go down, he would take any one of them down first. In order to save his own ass, he wouldnât hesitate to blame one of his staff for what was going on. Therefore, they all wanted to kiss his ass to avoid becoming the sacrificial lamb.
They had good reason to believe that the mayor would throw any one of them under the bus based on what they saw him doing to Tiphani Fuller. Back in the day, it seemed like Tiphani was always getting special treatment from the mayor, no matter how many times she fucked up a case, or how unprofessional she acted. None of the mayorâs staff liked her because they felt that she was a detriment to their office, but the mayor would ignore their pleas to fire her. There were always rumors of an affair between Tiphani and the mayor, but when he went so far as to recommend her for a promotion to the circuit court, that pretty much confirmed it in everyoneâs eyes. They were sure that he was screwing her.
Now, all of a sudden, when his campaign for state senate was in trouble and he needed a boost in his public perception, Tiphani was being outed as a corrupt judge, and a statewide manhunt was on for her. When it was his career on the line, he had no problem airing her dirty laundry to the world. Obviously the only person the mayor cared about was himself. His actions left the staff feeling like it was every man for himself.
âOh, you think it went very well, huh? I should fire your ass for saying that,â the mayor responded to Dexter.
